I’ve been thinking about definition - hard lines versus soft, a platonic ideal of clearly delineated space. Collage is a good way to get there, but paintings so often lose their hard lines if you are impulsive as I am.
So I’m enjoying the work of Brad Eberhard, whose overlapping forms and overlaid colors keep the clean lines of collage while having the effect of dappled light. They also feel full of symbolism, possibly relating ancient folklore.
That reminds me of an artist I met in San Francisco, Jovi Schnell, whose paintings are loaded with secret meaning and code that begs for cracking.
