My contraband images of his studies at the Morgan Library, before I was caught (The last one is from the Wall Street Journal, and many more are on arttattler). My lingering bitterness about the B I received on an assignment in VA 1 to “come up with your own Albers’ squares” one evening was assuaged by seeing the amount of study that went into his pursuit of color, which he compared to a musician’s endless rehearsals.

Photo

Robert Irwin at Pace. It’s hard to tell what’s happening here, but he cut a square out of the tinted glass, so you could see and hear and feel 57th street. Irwin always said he didn’t want his work photographed, because the image is nothing like the experience. His work makes the experience of being the viewer a self-conscious one, but in the best cases you forget yourself completely.

Photo

Leave it to me to find this in New York. In catching up, I’ll start with Al Taylor (1948-1999) at David Zwirner. This man learned his way around a line! He worked hard at taking that line out into space, dancing with shadows and gravity, but to me, the drawings are more satisfying. Very satisfying. I love a show where you get to walk around inside the artist’s head, seeing the unique problems that preoccupied him and his myriad responses. Click his name above for more images on Zwirner’s site.

While checking out my friend Alma’s gallery, I was happy...

While checking out my friend Alma’s gallery, I was happy to discover the work of Judith Belzer. These paintings spoke to me right away, with their looseness of line and color. They feel like she just got out the markers and used them til they ran out of pigment, sitting on the floor with legs splayed and mapping a space I fully understand. But looking back through her older work, I see that she only came to that looseness over time, slowly releasing what didn’t serve.

I’m so proud of my old compatriot Alma Chaney (we painted side by side at Pont-Aven) for her upcoming solo show at George Lawson Gallery in Los Angeles. Her paintings are so thoughtful and full of texture, the pictures will make you long for the real thing.

Collage is a good way to get there, but paintings so often lose their hard lines if you are impulsive as I am.

So I’m enjoying the work of Brad Eberhard, whose overlapping forms and overlaid colors keep the clean lines of collage while having the effect of dappled light. They also feel full of symbolism, possibly relating ancient folklore.

That reminds me of an artist I met in San Francisco, Jovi Schnell, whose paintings are loaded with secret meaning and code that begs for cracking.

Denise Levertov - The Secret

This is so satisfying.

THE SECRET

Two girls discover
the secret of life
in a sudden line of
poetry.

I who don’t know the
secret wrote
the line. They
told me

(through a third person)
they had found it
but not what it was
not even

what line it was. No doubt
by now, more than a week
later, they have forgotten
the secret,

the line, the name of
the poem. I love them
for finding what
I can’t find,

and for loving me
for the line I wrote,
and for forgetting it
so that

a thousand times, till death
finds them, they may
discover it again, in other
lines

in other
happenings. And for
wanting to know it,
for

assuming there is
such a secret, yes,
for that
most of all.

Check out this music video from Thunderegg.
